Conseil and Land joined me for part of every day in the big lounge. I began a diary to remember the wonders we saw and to help keep track of days. Each day when we surfaced to collect fresh air, I went out on the platform. I liked to enjoy the beauty of the sunrise and to spend time with no ceiling above me but the sky. Finally, on November 16, I entered my cabin to ﬁnd a note lying on my table. It was an invitation from Captain Nemo to go hunting with him the following morning. The note also invited Land and Conseil to join us.

We were able to add breadfruit to our supplies. Land insisted on cooking some immediately and set about building a ﬁre. Then, he cut the breadfruit into thick slices and put them on the hot coals of the ﬁre. After several minutes, the outside of each slice was completely toasted while the inside 59 had turned to a kind of white paste that tasted a bit like artichoke.
