Shortages of transport, the demands of the main offensive against Italian forces in Libya, then preparations for the expedition to Greece meant that the force tasked with the close investment and capture of Giarabub (dubbed ‘Wootten Force’) was to consist of a single battalion, the 2/9th, supported by a single company of the 2/10th, a composite machinegun platoon drawn from the latter and the 2/12th Battalion, and the field guns of a battery of the 4th Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery. The initial problem was the lack of a detailed intelligence picture of the Italians’ dispositions, especially to the south of the town.

72 As it happened, upon his return to Australia Savige was elevated to command of II Corps and lead it in operations on Bougainville in 1944–45. His promotion was probably owed to Blamey’s long-standing personal patronage, and aroused further comment among those who believed him unfit for higher command in modern war (which, in fairness to the regulars, was an opinion voiced as well by the commander of New Guinea Force, Lieutenant-General Sir Edmund Herring, another senior militia officer). Daly was fortunate to have come no closer to the nastiness that characterised relations between too many of his seniors at this time.
