The debate is set to continue and needs careful consideration in early meetings. However, there may be certain requirements imposed by the university which have to be met, whatever the student’s and supervisor’s views of the notion of generic skills. Conduct One of the key aspects of supervision to be clear about from the outset is the business of meetings and how they should be conducted. In particular, you should be involved in setting many of the ground rules for meetings, for example: Will you work from set agendas – and who will set them?

For example, with two supervisors, will you always meet together as a threesome? Will this always be possible? g. will they both read each and every draft of your chapters? Will they both advise on (say): methodology, the literature review, data analysis ...? Or will one advise in one area of your work and one in another? There are many other more general points to consider, for example: • What is the value of co-supervision ... and what are its drawbacks? 1)? • If you embark with one supervisor, is there perhaps a time when it may be valuable to bring in another?

This is a large job and will take time – in many cases, a clearer focus may not even emerge until after the student has started empirical work and begun to see what can or cannot be done in ‘the field’. It is a constant process of thinking, refining, going back, checking and sometimes guessing. As the Nobel prize-winning scientist Sir Peter Medawar described it, scientific method is a ‘mixture of guesswork and checkwork’ (Medawar, 1963 and 1976). 2.
