CaF2 has been known as an excellent buffer layer material for the growth of a variety of semiconductor materials including Si 22"27 and compound semiconductors such as CdTe or GaAs 26"32. In the past, high quality single crystal CaF2 buffer layers have been achieved on single crystal Si substrates. Here we adopted the OAD process to grow biaxially oriented CaF2 films on amorphous substrates as buffer layers. These buffer layers are used to grow biaxially oriented semiconductor films such as Ge and CdTe by physical vapor deposition and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), respectively at a temperature below the glass melting temperature of -600 °C.
Often, this direction is oriented normal to the substrate (out-of-plane) if the deposition flux is incident normally to the substrate. This 1-0 orientation is often not perfect in the sense that the
