A test was conducted on a stack tower built using two 92-cell blocks (previous block size). The tower was tested in a module enclosure environment, with fuel compositions representative of the system (simulated Baseline Power Plant fuel gas). 2 kW DC output. 0 kW. Overall, the stack tower operated for over 1900 hours. Subsequently, a 30 kW stack tower was assembled using two 96-cell stack blocks. Figure 4 shows a picture of the completed stack tower. The tower test included performance characterization using a simulated natural gas-based fuel feed.

The Baseline system is designed to remove at least 90% of carbon in the synthesis gas (syngas) for sequestration as CO2. The coal-based power plant is targeted to have a cost of $700/kW (2007 US dollars) for the SOFC power block. FCE utilizes the planar SOFC technology of its (wholly owned) subsidiary, Versa Power Systems, Inc. (VPS), for all its SOFC development programs. SOFC technology development includes cell performance enhancement, stack building block scale-up, stack robustness improvement, stack tower design and testing, and development of a 60 kW module accommodating multiple stacks.
