The choice of pattern should be based on three criteria: (1) Will it hold the tissues in the required position without undue tension? (2) Does it distribute tension on the suture material and tissue in such a manner as not to exceed the tensile strength of the suture material? (3) Does it require a minimal amount of suture material? A. Removal of sutures Removal of exposed sutures should be done some time between the fourth and the fourteenth postoperative day, depending on ( 1) the extent of the wound, (2) evidence of infection, and (3) the physical stress to which the wound may be subjected.
